Alzheimer’s and dementia in America, currently 1 in 7 Americans over age 71 have some sort of mental brain deterioration and about 3 out of 4 of those cases are Alzheimer’s. About 5.1 million Americans have Alzheimer’s Disease. It grows more dismal as the age increases, about 47% of people over 85 in the US have Alzheimer’s.
If things don’t change, the number of people 65 and older in the US with Alzheimer’s is estimated to be 7.7 million by 2030, 6 of 10 Americans over 85 will be suffering from Alzheimer’s.
Other developed countries have similar dismal statistics:
- In Canada 1 in 13 over 65 and 1 out of 3 over age 85 have Alzheimer’s or some form of dementia.
- In the UK, 1 in 14 over 65 and 1 out of 6 over age 80 are affected by this disease.
- Australians over 75 are nearly 1 out of 5 and rising to nearly 1out of 3 for people over 85.
In India there is a Stark difference, they are a fraction of what they are in the US and other developed countries.
In northern rural India, the occurrence of Alzheimer’s for people over 65 is less than 1 in 100. In more urban areas it is less than 3 in 100.
